First week without JK and J
Hi, all. Well, it was a week ago today that our daughter JK and her boyfriend J landed in New York and made their way, dragging tons of luggage, to their new home in New Jersey. We've talked and e-mailed a lot, and it sounds like they're getting settled, slowly but surely. J got a job delivering burgers on his bicycle; he starts Monday. JK is still looking, but she thinks Starbucks might be promising.

Thursday was my birthday (thanks for the birthday wishes, everyone). It was a pretty quiet day, which was fine with me. We went out to dinner last Wednesday at The Cheesecake Factory, which was nice, and just enjoyed a quiet night at home on my birthday. In fact since JK and J left, things have been really quiet. We did go to the Effie Yeaw Nature Center on Sunday and wander around on the trails, which was fun. We saw a herd of deer, and they were so close that I could hear them, which was really neat. But other than that, we've just been relaxing here at home.

Now that I have a third furlough day every month (thanks, dear Governator), I'm going to really miss JK and J, as "furlough Fridays" were our days for going out for sushi. But as long as we keep the e-mails and phone calls coming, I think I'll survive.

So that's pretty much what's been going on with me.

    The Big Day
Hi, all. Today's the day our daughter JK and her boyfriend J move to New Jersey. They're catching a midnight flight and will fly all night. It's hard to believe this is it. They've been living with us for the month of June, and we've had a wonderful time, so this is bittersweet for us. But I'm excited for them, as they start their new life, and it will be fun to visit them at some point. My only disappointment is that the car is so full of their luggage that I won't be able to ride to the airport with them, so I'll have to say my good-byes here. Oh well, in some ways short and sweet is easier.

    I'm on Facebook!
Hi, all. I just signed up for Facebook this evening, since JK is on it and I can keep tabs on her when she moves to New Jersey on Tuesday. And of course, then I started discovering all kinds of friends and relatives, and I just went crazy! And now here it is after 11:00, and I need to get to bed! I must be out of my mind!

    This week's update
Hi, all. I know that's a dorky subject line, but I couldn't think of anything snappy.

There's really not a whole lot to report. DSL is still working fine, but I'm still considering looking for a new DSL provider, and just keeping Earthlink dial-up for vacations. But it's nice to have it up and running for now.

JK and J are still here, getting ready for their big move to Jersey City. We've been having such a good time that I hate to see them leave. J is an excellent cook, and we've been having wonderful meals: fish tacos, pasta, and wonderful breakfasts. Today we had a lovely Father's Day brunch outside.

So that's the news from this part of the world. We just continue to move along, being excited for JK and J, but hating to see them move so far away too.

    A Fun Video
Hey, all, here's a fun video for you. It's a group of dancers doing a number from The Sound Of Music in a train station in Belgium, or some foreign country. I made JK describe it to me, and apparently it starts out with just six dancers, and ends up with something like 100 people, and I guess the reactions of the people going about their business are quite interesting. Enjoy.

    DSL is up again!
Hi, all! Well, our DSL is up again, no thanks to Earthlink. The guy from the phone company came out today and couldn't get a signal, so he took it upon himself to go check the main box, and lo and behold, the whole problem was caused by someone plugging something into the wrong port, which caused us to lose our DSL. So we've been functioning on dial-up for a week, probably going way over our 20 free hours (as I used some of that on vacation the week before), paying for DSL that we couldn't use, and paying for shipment of a modem that wouldn't have worked anyway. So I called Earthlink and they're going to send me a return label for the modem. With the modem would come a one-year contract with them, and I don't want to be under a contract with them. But it's nice to have the faster connection back up. JK and J, who are staying with us, just bought a laptop, and I got them online with us. So now Dunu is on the big computer, JK and J are on their laptop, and I'm on my BrailleNote, and it's all made possible to our newly-revived DSL connection!

    What a week!
Hi, all! Well, there's never a dull moment around here. I looked forward to settling down to our nice routine when we returned from Portland, but that was not to be. After Portland, I worked two days, and then took another four-day weekend, to use up my furlough days; so I had Thursday and Friday off, and then the weekend. Wednesday night we had a wonderful thunderstorm, with almost constant lightning. I, of course, got up and turned off the computer, and then an hour or so later I turned it on, because the storm seemed to have gone away. More rain came in later, and the power flickered, which caused the computer to turn off, but I didn't think much of it. The next morning I started doing e-mail, and got a couple messages sent, and then my DSL went down, and it still hasn't come up. We called Earthlink twice that day, and were told they were doing some kind of line migration or upgrade, and it might be a couple days. On Friday evening we called for an update, and they said it should have been up and referred us to their higher priority customer support, for all the good it did. They had Dunu plugging the modem into different places, including the phone box, but it still wouldn't work. The technician told us he'd have a technician from the phone company come out, just as Dunu pulled the wrong plug out of the phone box and disconnected us. So I tried to call back, and told them we'd been disconnected just as the Earthlink technician was going to schedule us with a phone company technician. Well the new Earthlink person left us on hold forever, then said she'd call us back. She did, to tell us that they were going to send us a new modem, because the signal on the line was good, but our modem wasn't receiving it. So we figured the phone company thing wasn't going to happen. Well, today we came home to find a message from the phone company, saying they'd come to fix our DSL problem, but couldn't get access to the phone box (probably because no one bothered to tell us they were coming!). So now they're coming this Friday, which is our day off. I really didn't want to spend my day off waiting around the house, but such is life. And our new modem is supposed to arrive on Monday. Until then, I'm using dial-up. Even though I'm totally frustrated, I can't help being amused too at how a few years ago I thought dial-up was fast enough for me. Amazing how times change!

And as if all that wasn't enough, last Friday our bunny Cinnamon, stopped eating and pooping, and had to spend the night in the hospital, to the tune of $600. She's doing great now. We can tell she's getting better, because she really fights taking her medication, and when she wasn't feeling well, she took it willingly. I'm happy she's better, but it was so much easier to give her the medication before!

So maybe in a few days this craziness will be over, and we can settle down again. But until then, I'm trying to just hang on and enjoy the ride.

    A Weekend in Portland
Hi, all. Last weekend our niece got married in Portland, so Dunu and I flew up for the wedding. We left on Thursday and returned yesterday afternoon. The wedding was lovely. The groom is Scottish, so he and all the guys wore kilts, and they had bagpipes and everything. It was really cool. It was quite a unique ceremony, in that they wrote their own vows, and they had a Celtic ceremony where, as they made their vows, the minister wrapped ropes around their hands and tied knots to symbolize their union. Very different, and very interesting.

But I think the best part of the weekend was getting to see all Dunu's family, most of whom live in Portland. And the weather was unbelievable! The temps were in the mid-eighties, warmer than what we had over the weekend in California. We jokingly said we brought the California weather with us.

While we were gone, our daughter JK and her boyfriend moved in with us. They're moving to New Jersey at the end of the month, so will live with us until they leave. We're really enjoying them, and getting all our socializing and meal sharing in while they're here. We're hoping to be able to go back once they're settled and pay them a visit. Thank God for e-mail!

    From Computers to Washing Machines
Hi, all. Well, my computer at work has been working just fine since its
second crash. But I must be a jinx to appliances or something, because last Friday when our daughter JK came over to wash clothes, the washing machine made a horrible noise. We thought it must have just been a fluke, so we decided to keep an eye on it. Well, Saturday when I did my laundry, it was banging real loud, and sounded like a shotgun. Yikes! We knew we had to call in a repair person. Well, when they came Tuesday, they said it would cost $500 to fix it, and we decided that for that amount of money we could get a new machine, so that's what we did. The one that broke was a front loader, and although we really liked it, Dunu thinks the way their designed might make them wear out more quickly, so we got a top loader. It was delivered today, and it's so nice to finally be able to do our laundry again! Not that we would have done laundry any sooner if nothing had happened to the machine, but you know how it is when you can't do something that you take for granted?

The one thing they told me at the store when we bought the machine that's been sticking with me is that washing machines and appliances in general are only built to last for six to eight years. I remember when I was growing up, my parents would have washers and dryers for twenty years or so; but I guess now, with people always moving, and the newest latest and greatest technological wonders constantly coming out, having something that lasts forever isn't a big priority for these companies anymore. It's a sad commentary on our society and its values, I think.

So that's my news for the week. Back to lurk mode.

    More adventures at work
Hi, all. Last week was a real long week at work. One of our techs was out ill most of the week, and two others were in class, another was on vacation, and another was loaned out to another area. So we were totally slammed on the phones. I was very glad when Friday came around! I was looking forward to getting to work today to see if more people were there. The good news was that the sick lady was back, as was the person on vacation and the guy on loan. But when I tried to log into my computer, it wouldn't boot. Turns out the hard drive was apparently bad. You may remember this was the computer they built for me just a few weeks ago. So they had to build me another one, and I had to reconfigure it as best I could and then jump on the phones; and it was then that I discovered that, for whatever reason, the request forms I fill out won't print. I can take requests and type everything in, but they either print as blank forms or I get some gibberish and then get thrown out of the database. Such fun (not)! So that's been my Monday.

Fortunately, my computer here at home is working fine. Last time my machine died at work, the one at home also died. But I've been spared that this time.

So life continues to be exciting and full of unexpected twists and turns. I'll keep you posted on any other adventures.

    Things are looking up!
Hi, all. Things have settled down after my week of computer hell. Last week was nice and peaceful and normal, just like I like weeks to be. Mother's Day was a really peaceful day. JK and her boyfriend came over and made brunch, and in the evening they came back over after JK got off work, and we went out for more food. We're spending as much time together as we can, because at the end of June, JK and her boyfriend are moving across country to New Jersey. We'll really miss them, but she's been wanting to move to the east coast for years, so I'm excited and happy for them too. Well, I guess that catches you up on what little news I have.

Hi, all. I just posted saying that I hadn't been able to use Firefox since my crash when Window-Eyes died. Well, after that post, I tried again to install Firefox, and lo and behold, it worked, and all my bookmarks and stuff are just where I left them. So I think I've emerged from my crash, finally!

    A Week of Computer Hell
Hi, all. This has been a week of computer hell for me, both at work and at home.

It started on Monday when I went to work. When I'd left the previous Thursday, everything worked fine. Friday was a furlough day, and on Monday, I couldn't connect to any of my networks or start the program I needed to do my job. I had to re-enter my username and password to do my e-mail, which I'd never had to do. My manager put in an urgent trouble ticket, and when no one had come by by midday, he upgraded it to a critical ticket. His boss and the computer guru tried to work on it, and by the end of the day I couldn't log on at all. I went home on Monday evening, looking forward to using my own computer, but somehow the sound card had gotten muted, and even after unmuting it, Window-Eyes couldn't find the files it needed to run. I was using 7.01; I'd been upgrading from the web, and didn't have the current CD. But when we couldn't get it working, we had to uninstall it and I went back to version 6, which was the last CD I had. That had some issues, but I could limp along. And then I discovered that Firefox would no longer open for me; I'd just get a message telling me to send a crash report.

On Tuesday at work, after more tinkering, our computer guru took my computer away, so I spent the day just sitting around and reading. No improvement on my computer at home.

On Wednesday they brought it back, to see if the fix they'd done had solved the problem. It hadn't, so off it went. I think it was also on Wednesday that I ordered the latest Window-Eyes CD, to see if I could fix my problem at home.

On Thursday afternoon they brought my computer back at work, and I was able to get into my e-mail, but I still had some incorrect settings and programs on it, so I still couldn't use the programs I needed to work.

On Friday they finally got the settings fixed on my computer at work, and I was able to work the last half of the day, and today I got and installed my Window-Eyes CD, so now my home computer is working well too, except for the Firefox problem, which I still haven't fixed, despite numerous installations and uninstallations. So I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I hope I don't have another week like this one for a long time!

    Lots to ponder here
If you haven't heard this yet, check out this link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

I find myself returning again and again to listen and ponder this. As I understand it, this lady isn't good-looking at all. I guess she's kind of dumpy and frumpy; Dunu didn't watch it with me, but said he saw it on the news, and said she looks like a man. The audience was all laughing at her until she opened her mouth and started to sing; then they were all blown away. What keeps sticking with me is how everyone keeps commenting on how surprised and shocked they were. Why? Did they think they could judge her by her appearance? What if she didn't have a singing talent? Would people just write her off because of her appearance? And as I poked around on Google later to learn more about her, I read an article about how they were going to give her a makeover. Why? To turn her into our image of what a professional singer should look like, rather than looking at whether we need to change or do away with our images? Or perhaps to offer her something that she's never had an opportunity to have before? But with what motivation? Kindness? Pity? Superiority and self-righteousness? How and why do we make the judgments we make, and what do we miss because we judge as we do? Does it take someone like Susan Boyle to come along and wake us up? And how long will we stay awake before we need another Susan to come along? Just some things I pondered as I listened to this and which I continue to ponder.

I guess I'd better do an update!
Hi, all. Every time I log in to read my friends' LJ entries, I'm reminded just how long it's been since I've done an update. The problem is, I just haven't had enough to share to warrant an update. But I finally decided I should really post something, just so you'll know I haven't dropped off the earth.

I've been enjoying pleasant spring weather. As soon as it became apparent it was going to be warmer, I pulled out my Birkenstocks and have been wearing them ever since! Only temps in the 30's or rain showers will get me to put on shoes and socks once spring has sprung. I love my Birkies! We have a chance for some rain next week, but it sounds like it might not be all that much, so I'm hoping I can keep my Birkies on and walk between the drops.

Last weekend, my friend Barb came over and we watched the movie Young At Heart together. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. It's about a chorus of elderly people in Massachusetts that sings rock 'n roll. It's a true story, and it's a great movie. I got hooked when I saw it in the theater, so I bought the video. I mentioned it to Barb, and she'd never seen it, so I invited her over. She's a really good describer, so I got to learn some things about the movie that I didn't know before. I think we both enjoyed it.

Other than that, I've just been doing the work thing. We've been quite busy, so I've been earning my money. We'll now only get one furlough day a month, which I find a little disappointing. I like the fact that my paycheck will be larger, but I've sure been enjoying the days off. Oh well, I'll still get the one day, and I can always take a vacation day when I want to.

So I guess that brings everyone up to speed with life in my corner of the net.

    I'm ready for spring!
Hi, all. When I started thinking about spring coming a few weeks back, I was a bit disappointed, as I like snuggling in my house on a cold winter's night. But our temps finally got warm enough here that I could pull out my Birkenstocks, and in that moment I knew I was ready for spring! Our weather was quite mild last week, in the 60's and low 70's. Yesterday I think we got up to the upper 70's. I had a furlough day, and I wore short sleeves all day. I had a sweater with me that I started out wearing, but it was just too hot for it, so most of the time I didn't wear it. Dunu and I went out for sushi with JK and J. We went to a restaurant that had outside seating, and it was wonderful to sit and eat in the sun and smell the wisteria. Later we sat out on our patio and enjoyed the evening and the wind chimes. But today the weather is more like winter. We only got up to the low 60's, and we've had some light rain, with heavier ran coming in tonight and tomorrow. I know we need it, and I have nowhere to go, so I can sit inside and enjoy it; but I'm really hoping it's gone by Monday, because I want to wear my Birkies to work again!

    Popping in for an update
Hi, all. Thought I'd drop in for an update, since it's been a while. It took me a really long time to adjust to the time change. I was totally wiped out for the first week, and off and on during part of the second week. I think my body has finally accepted the fact that this is the new time, and I'm not waking up at weird hours anymore. But it was sure tough for a while there!

The big news this week is that our daughter JK's bike got stolen on Monday evening. I've been going to our parish's retreat every evening, starting Monday. Dunu and I were eating dinner early. He'd finished and was starting to wash dishes, while I finished up. I thought I heard voices in our driveway or backyard or some weird place, so I turned and was listening. Dunu can't remember what got his attention, but he wandered out into our backyard. Next thing I knew, I heard him yell, "Hey!!!", at the top of his lungs. He didn't come in for a long time, and I got worried. I went out to investigate, and that's when he told me about JK's bike. She was pretty upset about it, since she was having a hard week anyway, battling a cold. But she must not be suffering too much, as when Dunu offered her the use of an extra bike we have around here, she said, "No, I want something that's cute." But it was a tough way to start a week.

The rest of the week has gone well for me. We've been having nice spring-like weather, so I've pulled out my Birkenstocks! I'm ready for spring. It's supposed to rain this weekend, but until it does, I'm enjoying my Birkies.

Tomorrow is a furlough day for me, so I'm looking forward to sleeping in and relaxing.

Okay, that's my latest news. Happy spring!

    A Fun Couple Of Days
Hi, all. Yesterday was a busy but fun day for me. It started out normally
enough. I had my voice lesson in the morning. A cellist came, who was
going to be playing for one of the songs I was singing for the recital. It
was really fun to rehearse with an extra musician and hear the cello along
with the piano played by my voice teacher. On the way home, Dunu and I
picked up sandwiches from Subway, and ate lunch and dozed with the Dr.
Demento show. Then I just had enough time to finish my chores (not enough
to check mail), before dashing off to church. Mass ended about 6:20, and my
recital started at 7:00 in Davis, which is about a half hour away, so Dunu
was outside waiting for us. My friends Barbara and Anecita came with us,
and our friend Frances came from Vacaville and met us there. I was the
second person on the program, since the cellist was just playing for two
songs, and our voice teacher wanted him to be able to leave when he was
done. I was feeling nervous while the first singer sang, and was afraid I'd
be too nervous to sing well. But once I got up and the music started, my
nervousness disappeared, and I just sang. I don't know objectively if it
sounded good or not, but I felt good about it. My second song was in the
second act, and was a sung telephone conversation between myself and my
friend Margaret. My voice teacher and I had rehearsed it by her letting me
have her cell phone with me (mine is too chatty), and she'd call me while I
was announcing the song and talking about the composer (Menotti). She
assigned this duty to her boyfriend, who was in the back, probably video
taping. But when he tried to call, he got her voice mail and it didn't
ring. I was starting to panic when I didn't hear the phone ringing,
wondering what to do. He called from the back, "Peggy, I think your phone
is ringing." I pretended to be totally embarrassed and pulled it out of my
pocket, apologizing to the audience and acting like I was going to get rid
of the caller, only to go into the song, which is full of laughing and
gossiping and stuff. The audience was laughing too, which was fun. Oh, and
one of the guys who was singing an aria from The Marriage Of Figaro used Dunu
as a prop. I guess the song is about the singer being upset because the
other guy (Dunu) is married to the woman the singer wants, so the singer's
supposed to be threatening to send him into the army to have him killed. So
Dunu's job was to sit onstage and look nervous. The singer is more of a
musical theatre singer than an aria singer, so he was hamming it up, as was
Dunu. On the last verse, he grabbed Dunu by his shirt and pulled him out of
the chair and started dancing him around the stage. Dunu was on his tiptoes.
Dunu wasn't prepared for that one! So after I did my second
song, Dunu came up to escort me back to my seat, and he grabbed me by the
shirt collar to escort me. When this guy got up to sing again, he
teasingly looked at Dunu and said, "Come here, boy." After the recital,
we stayed around and had cookies my voice teacher had made, and then the
five of us went out for dinner at Applebees. We didn't get home until after
11:00, which was after 12:00 considering the time change. I had to set all
my clocks and do a few things before bed, including giving our bunny Cinnie a little
love and some fresh water; so by the time I went to bed, it was 1:30 or so,
Daylight Savings Time. I didn't even attempt to catch up on e-mail until
    today.
This afternoon, our daughter JK and her boyfriend J came over for brunch. Dunu had gotten a gift
card for Trader Joe's for Christmas, so he and they bought a bunch of food
(while I was here exercising and showering and finishing laundry), and they
came back and JK and J cooked brunch for Dunu's birthday, which is
tomorrow. We had waffles with chocolate chips and strawberries and bananas,
and potatoes and eggs and zucchini, and mimosas and vanilla-flavored coffee
to drink. It was yummy. I just got done taking a nice long nap.
So that's been my adventures for the last couple days. I can't believe it's
    back to work tomorrow.

    Back in the routine
Hi, all. Well, I've been back at work for a couple weeks now, and things are like I'd never had a vacation. I only had to work three days the first week I came back, because Friday the 20th was a furlough day, so I got to ease into the return to work gradually. But last week I had to work a full five days, which I hadn't done for a long time! I'm amazed by how many people still don't know when state offices will be closed. It's been on the news forever that state offices are closed on the first and third Fridays of the month, but we still get calls on other Fridays from people wondering if we're open. I wonder if people just don't listen to the news, or they don't look at calendars, or what?

Anyway, things have been pretty routine since being back to work. Oh, last Monday our contemplative prayer group had what they call a lunde gras meal. Since we meet on Mondays, the meal was on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, so it was a lunde gras instead of a mardi gras. The lady whose house we went to prepared the whole thing, along with her friend who is also in the group. The rest of us brought wine, and they served us and cleaned up and everything. It was really nice.

A week from tonight I'm having a voice recital. I'm doing two songs: Verdi Prati by Handel, and Hello Oh Margaret It's You by Menotti (sp). I'll have to make a mad dash there after Mass next Saturday, as the Mass I go to and sing at ends about 6:15, and the recital is about a half hour away and starts at 7:00, and I'll be one of the first singers. Yikes!

So that's the news from my neck of the woods. I know it's not much, but it's been so long since I've done a post that I figured it was about time for an update.
